My name is Rie Onishi, the young proprietress of Onishi Tsune Shoten.

Every day, we assist customers who purchase fans in our stores with their purchases! Since many of you may be purchasing a fan for the first time, we would like to provide a brief guide on how to choose a fan.

  1. Which fan should I choose?

There are various types of fans, such as summer fans, dancing fans, and festive fans, but most people mainly purchase fans to keep cool. They are divided into men’s and women’s fans, but gender does not matter as long as you like the design. Recently, more and more women want to use men’s chic designs.

  2. What’s the price difference?

I am often asked what the difference is between an overpriced fan and an inexpensive fan. There are many factors, but the main differences are in the “number of bones” and “processing of the fan surface.

    Number of Bones
The amount of airflow differs greatly depending on the number of bones used for the fan. Our company often uses 35 bones, but if you use 45 or 60 bones, the amount of airflow will increase at once, and the feeling of use will be much better. The price increases with the number of bones.
    Processing of fan surface
In most cases, paper fans priced under 3,000 yen have a picture on only one side. For more than 3,000 yen, there are patterns on both sides, and you can use the fan in two different ways. The price goes up if it is hand-painted.
For silk fans, the standard price is 3,000 yen or more, but they are made with one side of the fan. Those made of linen are more affordable, but those made of silk are much more expensive.
  3. Which is better, a paper fan or a silk fan?

There are different types of summer fans, which are divided into paper and silk fans. A silk fan is made of one piece of cloth, while a paper fan is made of three layers of paper. We recommend paper fans. Some people say, “I have been using it for 10 years! There are even people who say, “I have been using it for 10 years!

  4. What kind of fan should I choose when giving it to someone?

For events such as retirement or kanreki (60th birthday), we recommend a price of 5,000 yen or more, but if the gift is given as a small present, a price of around 3,000 yen is fine. However, each person has his or her own preference for colors and patterns. In such cases, please check the color palette of the person to whom you wish to give the gift. This will give you an idea of their preferences when choosing small items such as pouches and organizers. Still, you are not sure! I’m not sure! If you are still unsure, please prepare a photo of the person you would like to present. We will be able to suggest items that would suit you better by taking a look at your face, colors, and what you are wearing. Please feel free to contact us in store, online, or by phone.
