About Ohnishi Tune Shoten
History of Ohnishi Tune Shoten
The Ohnishi family originally operated as a motoyui (traditional paper hair cord) manufacturer in Kyoto’s Kennin-ji area from the Edo through the Meiji periods. Motoyui were decorative cords made of washi paper, used for securing traditional Japanese hairstyles.
However, as Japanese hairstyles declined in popularity and Western fashion became widespread, the need for motoyui gradually faded. This shift in cultural trends became the catalyst for starting a new venture in folding fan production.
Since then, for over a century, we have developed an integrated business model—from crafting to selling folding fans.
Today, we continue to serve customers who demand the highest quality, including temples,
shrines, and prominent figures in the world of Japanese shogi.

From a House of Fan-Making to a Creator of Cultural Winds
The folding fan (sensu), a revered traditional craft of Japan, was first conceived in the Heian period and has since been cultivated within the refined worlds of Noh, dance, and other enduring cultural expressions.
In today’s world, where the breeze of a fan cannot rival that of modern appliances, its true value lies not in mere function, but in the beauty, symbolism, and heritage it carries.
Our purpose extends beyond the crafting of fans—we are devoted to preserving and conveying the cultural legacy they embody, sharing their artistry with people across the world.
Looking ahead, we will not only continue our century-old craft, but also dedicate ourselves to creating a “wind of culture” that carries the stories, traditions, and spirit of the folding fan forward to the next generation, ensuring that this heritage endures for years to come.

Our commitment to meticulous craftsmanship and strict quality control ensures fans that grow more familiar and pleasant with time.
Enjoy the gentle breeze born from natural materials. -
Proposals to Suit Your Budget and Occasion
Our aim is to recommend what is truly best for each customer.
We select suitable fans based on the recipient’s age, budget, and purpose of the gift.
There are many fine fans that are not necessarily the most expensive.
If we do not carry the exact item you are looking for, we are happy to connect you with nearby shops through our trusted network. -
Comprehensive Aftercare and Maintenance
We are committed to thorough aftercare service.
The kaname—the pivot point of a fan—is the part most prone to wear.
We offer free replacement for this part, as often as needed, for all fans purchased from us (a fee of ¥1,100 applies for fans purchased elsewhere).
We also accept other repairs whenever possible, so please feel free to consult us for assistance.

At Ohnishi Tsune Shoten, we are dedicated to sharing the culture surrounding folding fans with as many people as possible.
Our company headquarters is housed in a traditional Kyomachiya townhouse, which for generations has served as a place for social gatherings and the exchange of ideas—often through lessons in Noh theater, Jōruri chanting, and other cultural arts.
Today, we continue this tradition by operating the space as a hub where people and culture meet, interact, and grow together.
